미국 뉴욕 유엔본부 앞에서 티베트 독립운동가가 분신해 숨지는 사건이 발생했다.
2일(현지시간) 로이터 통신에 따르면 이날 오후 6시30분쯤 유엔본부 앞에서 티베트 독립운동가 롭가랑젠이 티베트 독립과 단결을 호소하는 연설을 한 뒤 분신했다.
신고를 받고 출동한 뉴욕경찰(NYPD)은 전신에 화상을 입은 랑젠을 병원으로 이송했으나 결국 사망했다.
우버 운전사로 일해온 랑젠은 당시 티베트 국기를 들고 사건 현장에 나온 것으로 알려졌다. 그의 동료 운전사이자 티베트 공동체 구성원인 롭상 팔조르는 해외 망명 티베트인 매체 ‘보이스 오브 티베트’에 “(랑젠이) 중국 정부가 티베트인에게 가한 각종 제한 조치에 격분했다”고 전했다.
